This feature was suggested/requested by a potential client in a demo.
To support better networking opportunities, the client suggested having customizable labels that participants can select. The purpose of these labels would not be in relation to the event itself(ie roles), but rather conference specific tags similar to the research interests.
In the client's case, the event is a corporate event with different stakeholders from industries. Having a custom label displayed next to their name, such as "Financial Banker," "Constrution & Developent," or "Consultant" would allow participants to quickly see who is who and get into contact quicker without having to leave the VV and look at thier LinkedIn (for example).
I could see this option as an added value for academic/scientific conferences as well, when a participant would like to mingle with a particular type of person that goes beyond our "commmon research interests."
I could see this option on the same page as the research interests, where particiapnts can select from a number of options "How would you identify your role/field of specialty." (If this option is ativated by the organizer)
